What's Actually on the Checklist
We clean the outdoor coil, which matters more here than almost anywhere else because Gulf humidity and salt-carrying air corrode and coat coils faster than in drier climates, quietly cutting efficiency long before a system fails outright. We check refrigerant pressures against manufacturer specs, since a slightly low charge can go unnoticed for a season while it still makes the compressor work harder and drives up your bill.
We inspect every electrical connection and measure amp draw on the compressor and fan motors, because loose or corroded connections and rising amp draw are the earliest warning signs of the capacitor and contactor failures we see so often once summer load hits. The capacitor gets tested under load rather than just eyeballed, since a capacitor can measure fine at rest and still fail within days once the system runs nonstop.
We flush the condensate line, which matters enormously in our humidity — algae growth inside that line is one of the most common reasons a system shuts itself down mid-summer when the float switch trips on a clogged drain. We also replace or check the filter, calibrate the thermostat against actual temperature, and inspect the blower assembly for dust buildup that restricts airflow.
When to Schedule It in the Valley
Late winter through early spring is the ideal window, before daytime highs push into the 90s and your system shifts into the nearly continuous run cycle that defines a McAllen summer. Scheduling then means any worn part gets caught and addressed while the system is running light, instead of being discovered the hard way in June.
Waiting until the first hot week to book a tune-up means competing for appointment time with everyone else whose system just failed, and it means running a compromised system through the hottest stretch of weather before anyone catches the problem.
Efficiency and Breakdown Prevention
A dirty coil, a marginal capacitor, or a clogged condensate line don't usually cause a sudden failure on their own — they make the system work harder, run longer, and draw more power to produce the same cooling, which shows up as a higher bill well before it shows up as a breakdown. Catching those issues during a tune-up is almost always cheaper than the repair bill and the days of discomfort that come from waiting for a full failure during 100°F-plus weather.
It's also simply easier on the equipment. A system that runs nearly nonstop for six months a year, in an attic that can reach very high temperatures and against power quality that includes occasional brownouts and surges, lasts longer when it isn't also fighting a dirty coil or a weak capacitor on top of everything else.
Maintenance and Manufacturer Warranties
Most manufacturer warranties on compressors and major components require documented annual maintenance to stay valid, and a skipped year can be the reason a claim gets denied on an otherwise covered part. We provide documentation of the service performed so you have a record if a warranty claim ever comes up.
Keeping that documentation current costs far less than losing coverage on a compressor replacement, which is one more reason an annual tune-up is worth scheduling even on a system that seems to be running fine.
